Dear Ruth Asawa School of the Arts Colleagues and School Community,

I want to take this opportunity to personally and publicly thank Mr. Brian Kohn for the past three years of service as principal of Ruth Asawa School of the Arts.  Mr. Kohn recently announced his decision to not return to Ruth Asawa School of the Arts.

The Board Education and Superintendent Carranza has approved the appointment of Mr. Barnaby Payne as the new principal of Ruth Asawa School of the Arts.  Mr. Payne is a native of San Francisco who has served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and parent in SFUSD.

Mr. Payne has served as the principal of Abraham Lincoln High School for the past seven years.  At Lincoln he engaged the school community to work collaboratively to create programs to better meet the needs of students and to expand course offerings in the arts, career pathways, and ethnic studies.

Mr. Payne is a leader who is strategically focused on equity and has extensive experience in curriculum design and implementation, teaching, and leadership.   He is a tenured principal in SFUSD with a strong record of success.   He was selected High School Principal of the Year by Mayor Ed Lee in 2015.

Please join me in officially welcoming Mr. Payne as the principal of Ruth Asawa School of the Arts.

Sincerely,

Bill W. Sanderson

Assistant Superintendent of High Schools
