Congratulations to the CLASS OF 2018!

Your student is in the final stretch of their high school career and graduation is on the horizon.  As we approach this important day, we want to provide you with information for planning purposes.

 

Graduation Ceremony & Reception:

Graduation will be Tuesday, June 5, 2018.  The ceremony will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre located at 3301 Lyon Street in San Francisco.   A reception following graduation, with light appetizers and beverages, will begin around 12:30 p.m. in the reception hall located inside the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre.


Graduating students must arrive at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre no later than 9 a.m. with their caps and gowns. Please ensure your student does not bring personal items, purses, backpacks etc., as we are unable to provide security for personal items while the graduation ceremony is in progress. Graduating student family members and guests should be in their seats no later than 9:50 a.m.

 

Graduation Tickets:

Seating is limited at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre and admission to the graduation event will be by ticket only. Each graduating student will automatically be allotted two (2) free tickets. Two (2) additional free tickets will be available to those students and families who return the RSVP form on or before the due date:  May 11, 2018.
 

After receiving all RSVP forms, we will be able to determine the number of seats available for sale.  These remaining tickets will be sold through the Asawa SOTA website on a first come/ first served basis, beginning Monday, May 21. These additional tickets can be purchased online.  Click HERE to purchase.


Graduation Pictures:

A professional photographer from Campus Candids will be taking pictures at the graduation ceremony. Each graduate will have a photo opportunity when they receive their diploma. This will allow the ceremony to proceed in an orderly manner and we ask that parents refrain from coming to the stage to take photos. Following the ceremony, Campus Candids can be contacted via their website www.gradfotonetwork.com or at 800-453-0335.


Graduation Ceremony DVD:

A video production company will record and produce a DVD of the ceremony. You can pre-order a copy of the DVD on the RSVP form. You can also purchase a copy of the DVD on the day of the ceremony. The DVDs will be mailed to your home address approximately 1-2 weeks following graduation.


Graduation Caps & Gowns:

All graduating students MUST wear the SOTA cap and gown to graduation. Caps and Gowns will be distributed to seniors on Monday, June 4 from 8am to 10 am in the third floor gallery (Room A312), across from the college center. There is no cost for the cap and gown this year!


Graduation Rehearsal:

There will be a graduation rehearsal on Monday, June 4 at 10:15 am. in SOTA’s Dan Kryston Memorial Theater. Attendance is mandatory. Tickets for graduation will be distributed to the students at the conclusion of rehearsal.

 

Senior Luncheon & Awards Ceremony:

A luncheon and awards ceremony for graduating students has been scheduled for Monday, June 4.  To volunteer for this event, please sign up HERE!

 

Graduation Ceremony Expenses:

In keeping with the Asawa SOTA tradition of having graduation at an offsite venue with a reception following, we have reserved the Palace of Fine Arts venue for our 2018 graduates.  As in the past, this event is entirely funded from the PTSA budget!

 

Financial contributions are requested to cover the cost of the venue, reception, senior awards luncheon, printed programs, etc.   We suggest a $100.00 donation per graduating student.  We recognize that many families are facing mounting expenses with their students heading to college, but we hope we are giving plenty of time to plan for this expenditure.  If you are in a position to contribute now, we greatly appreciate your generosity!   No donation is too small.  

 

Donations and DVD Purchases:

  • Online Payment:  Click Here!
  • Check: Mail or drop off a check to the main office payable to SOTA PTSA, 555 Portola Drive, San Francisco, CA  94131.  Please note “Graduation 2018” or "Graduation DVD" in the memo section.
  • Cash:  Place cash in a envelope with a note including your student's name and what it is for.  Hand deliver to one of the office staff in the main office.

CMEA Festival 2018
The CMEA Music Festival for large ensemble band and orchestra groups took place on our campus on May 18th & 19th.  The event coordinator was Mr.Henry Hung, Asawa SOTA Band Director.  Thanks to all the parent and students volunteers.  We had over 1000 musicians come through our campus and everything ran smoothly!  You rock.

Join representatives from the San Francisco Unified School District for a town hall to help shape the future of arts education in our public schools. Everyone in the community is welcome!
 

In 2006, the San Francisco Unified School District (SFUSD) put in place the Arts Education Master Plan (AEMP) as a way of integrating the arts into students' daily learning. Now, as SFUSD begins a year-long process to refresh the AEMP, it seeks to learn from the experiences of the SF community - teachers, parents, community members, district partners, non profits, and students - on what is going well with arts education and what opportunities exist to improve arts education.

 

Join us for a town hall to share your feedback and help shape the future of arts education in San Francisco.

 

Each town hall will be led by consultants from Third Plateau and Olive Grove, with representatives from SFUSD in attendance. You'll be asked questions such as:

  • What do you hope continues with arts education in SF schools?
  • What do you hope changes in arts education in SF schools?

We look forward to learning from your experience and working together to strengthen arts education.

If you have never registered for access to the SFUSD gradebook (Synergy), then it is now time to get started.  Registration only needs to happen once, so incoming families that already registered while at their SFUSD middle schools do not have to register again.

This year we are providing Staff Appreciation events year-round! 

 

And we are going big in May! We've already provided a low key oatmeal breakfast in the new Staff Lounge (Room A216A, across from the library) and next week, we are hosting luncheon, extending Staff Appreciation Week to share the love a little longer.  Thursday, May 17th from 10am-2pm.

 

The meal will be a Taco Bar, fruit and homemade treats.  We would love your help! Sign up today!

Synergy (by Edupoint)
Synergy (also known as Gradebook for All, ParentVUE, StudentVUE…). This is the main website used by the district for attendance, grades, schedule and communication from admin and teachers.

NOTE: For ParentVUE, you will need an activation code to create your account.  You can either call the main office or email Merrill Komai directly at komaim@sfusd.edu if you do not have one.  In order to receive Mr.Payne’s Monday Reminders, you will need to have your ParentVUE account set up with your email.  For incoming families, you will receive your activation code in the Fall.
 
Asawa SOTA School Loop 
The website portion will still be up and running for the rest of this school year and maybe some of next year.  Logging into the site or on the app is no longer available.  Basic updates to school loop will be made over the year and the links to the school google calendars will still be available.

As many of you have heard, we have decided to postpone our 35th Anniversary Gala Celebration at City Hall that was to be held on Friday, April 20, 2018. 
 
April 20th has recently been named a National Day of Action to Prevent Gun Violence, and many events are being planned across the country, including a large rally in San Francisco’s Civic Center. In an effort to give both events the attention they deserve, we have decided to postpone our event until Friday, October 5, 2018.

RUTH ASAWA SOTA GRADUATION INFORMATION

 

CONGRATULATIONS to the CLASS OF 2018!

 

Your student is in the final stretch of their high school career and graduation is on the horizon.  As we approach this important day, we want to provide you with some preliminary information for planning purposes.

 

Letters with this information have been mailed directly to your home.  Please review and confirm the spelling of your student’s name that will appear in the Graduation Program and on their official Diploma.  Please confer with your student and notify us immediately if you require any change.  If we do not hear from you on or before Friday, April 6th, we will assume you and your student are fine with the spelling we have on file. 

 

For changes, please contact Ben Rombro at rombrob@sfusd.edu or drop a note by the Asawa SOTA front office addressed to his attention.  Again, time is of the essence!

Graduation Ceremony & Reception:

Graduation will be Tuesday, June 5, 2018.  The ceremony will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. at the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre located at 3301 Lyon Street in San Francisco.   A reception following graduation, with light appetizers and beverages, will begin around 12:30 p.m. in the reception hall located inside the Palace of Fine Arts Theatre.

Graduation Tickets:

Although we believe there will be ample seating for everyone who wants to attend, seating is limited at the Palace of Fine Arts and admission to the graduation event will be by ticket only.  Each graduating student will automatically be allotted two (2) free tickets.  Two additional tickets will be available to those students and their families who request these extra tickets via RSVP.   RSVP forms, along with more detailed graduation information, will be mailed to you in mid-April. 

After receiving all RSVP forms, we will be able to determine the number of seats available for sale.  These remaining tickets will be sold through the Asawa SOTA website.  This system has worked very well the last nine years and we feel confident that everyone will be accommodated. 

Senior Luncheon & Awards Ceremony:

A luncheon and awards ceremony for graduating students has tentatively been scheduled for Monday, June 4th.  We will need senior parent volunteers to help plan this event.  If you can volunteer, please contact volunteer@sfsota.org as soon as possible.

Graduation Ceremony Expenses:

In keeping with the Asawa SOTA tradition of having graduation at an offsite venue with a reception following, we have reserved the Palace of Fine Arts venue for our 2018 graduates.  As in the past, this event is entirely funded from the PTSA budget! 

Financial contributions are requested to cover the cost of the venue, reception, senior awards luncheon, printed programs, etc.   We suggest a $100.00 donation per graduating student.  We recognize that many families are facing mounting expenses with their students heading to college, but we hope we are giving plenty of time to plan for this expenditure.  If you are in a position to contribute now, we greatly appreciate your generosity!   No donation is too small.

The San Francisco Unified School District proudly presents the SFUSD Arts Festival; a celebration of student creativity in visual, literary, media, and performing arts hosted by the Asian Art Museum in the Civic Center from March 14-21, 2018. (The museum will be open on Monday, March19 for school groups only.)

 

For over 30 years this unique San Francisco event has been a point of destination for families, teachers, artists, and community members from San Francisco and beyond. The promise of equity and access in arts education for all students preK-12 during the curricular day, made real by the SFUSD’s groundbreaking Arts Education Master Plan, finds its point of destination in this festival, where all who attend may see for themselves the inspiration and creativity inherent in all of our youngest San Franciscans!

Meeting Reminder!   The March IPPAC (Inclusive Practices Parent Advisory Council) meeting is tomorrow (3/14) at 6:30pm in the main conference room.  
 
The main topic will be looking at the preliminary school budget and the needs within the Special Education department.   Still to be confirmed but we are hoping to have representatives for the CAC for Special Education and a representative from the district.

We are seeking volunteers to help proctor the Asawa SOTA AP Exams.  Please click HERE to sign up!

 

The AP Examinations will be administered at Asawa SOTA from May 7th to May 18th.

 

One proctor is required per 30 students.  Anyone 18 or older can volunteer to be a proctor as long as they are not related to a student taking the test.  A training session will be given on May 1st at 5:30pm in the main conference room.

This Wednesday, March 14 is the Women's March national day of action in support of gun control.

 
Student leaders from our school have been featured in the local media and are planning a school wide walk out at 10am.  After gathering on our field for a student led program, many students are planning to join a city wide student march meeting at City Hall at 11:30am.  The Mayor of SF, Mark Ferrell, has contacted our student leaders and has requested to attend the 10am event in school.
 
Although the administration and staff support our students’ right to protest and take political action, this is not a school sponsored activity. By law, classes must still be held and roll taken. Students who chose not to participate will also be supported. Nevertheless, students safety remains our top priority our youth will be supervised to the greatest extent possible.

This is a message for families of SFUSD high school students regarding possible school walkout events on March 14. There are likely going to be students who leave school (walkout) on Wednesday, March 14  related to a youth-led National School Walkout to End Gun Violence.

We understand and respect our students’ desire to honor the victims of gun violence and to express their views. However, we do not encourage students to leave school during the school day. If students do leave school during the school day, we will not stop them and will do our best to notify parents and guardians in a timely manner.

 

Please understand that if your child is absent without a valid excuse, it will be considered an unexcused absence.

Next Friday (March 16th) course selection assemblies will be held for the 9th, 10th , and 11th grades.

 

In these assemblies the course selection process will be clearly detailed and explained to the students. Department Heads and counseling staff will be present and will offer students information about each course, the workload, the content, and what to expect in their classes.

 
All students will be given a tutorial on how to select classes on our online course registration portal (StudentVue) as well as a hard copy of the course selection request form (yellow for 9th grade, blue for 10th, and pink for 11th).
 
The form is to be signed by both student and parent/guardian and returned no later than Friday March 23rd. We will begin accepting completed course schedule requests Monday March 19th. They may be turned in to the front office secretaries or the student's grade-level counselor.
 
Additionally, and in order to help our students make the wisest, most informed, academically beneficial decision as they select their courses for next year students are encouraged to check in with individual teachers with follow-up question regarding courses, to review course description videos on the SOTA website under the tab: COURSE VIDEOS, and will receive academic counseling from Grade-level counselors throughout their decision and selection process.

College Financial Planning: February 27th, 7pm
Nancy Corrigan with Beacon College Funding Solutions will provide an overview of the college financial process, an overview of FAFSA and the financial aid work, and how to plan for paying for college.   Beacon is offering one free individual session for families who attend this workshop: sign ups will be available.

 

College Testing: March 15th, 7pm
Lia Lackey with Compass Education Group will provide an overview of the ACT and SAT with information about test preparation. Lia began SAT and ACT tutoring in 1997 while completing her B.A. in Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley. She also served with the Sacramento County Office of Education, developing science achievement exams for high schools. Lia has maintained a passion for education in her work at Compass, where she enjoys working individually with families and mentoring the director team.

 

College Planning: April 11th, 7pm
Ms. Alberts, Asawa SOTA College Counselor,  will give Juniors and their families an overview of the college application process, help them understand their transcripts, make sure they are on track for graduation, and get them started on their college search.

Opening this weekend, Message in a Bottle is an Art and Education Event featuring ocean inspired art by local artists with over 200 Ruth Asawa SOTA students participating! 

Huge thanks to Kyle Trefny (Visual 2020) Max Alamilla-Boyd (Architecture and Design 2020) and Grace McGee (Theatre Tech 2020) for organizing their peers with passionate enthusiasm.

This year’s event is held on February 23-25, 2018 at The Venue at the Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco.  All events are free and open to the public. Friday's opening is all ages and requires an RSVP.

The art show opens this Friday but come enjoy dance, music, film and spoken word performances by our students on Sunday, February 25th, 10AM-2PM.

    • Attendance, out-of-class referrals and suspension data
    • Student and family school climate surveys
  • Based on that data, set goals and identify priorities for the next school year. What are the programs, services, and other resources your school wants to focus on to reach these goals?
  • Beginning the week of Feb. 19, look at how the draft school budget can best support these goals and priorities.

Students have received the registration packets for the AP Exams taking place May 7th-18th. Registration is from February 5th-15th.  The paperwork that was sent home with students is attached.

All Asawa SOTA students will get an email to their SFUSD GMail to sign up on Monday afternoon, February 5th (the form will only collect responses from SFUSD email addresses). 
 
Critical steps: 
  1. Fill out the google form, beginning on Feb 5th. 
  2. Sign AP Testing Information form (attached), obtain parent signature. 
  3. Bring form to the office when you submit payment (exact cash or check) by Feb 15th. Checks should be made out to “Ruth Asawa SOTA”. Point people for payment collection: Caitlin Boyle & Emily delReal.
In order to administer these exams, we will need LOTs of volunteer proctors.  So please save the date and be on the look out for the volunteer sign up.  It will be available after registration is complete.

This Spring, the students, arts directors, and artists-in-residence of the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts will present their annual schoolwide musical....

From March 2-11, almost 3000 people will fill the Dan Kryston Theater at Ruth Asawa SOTA to enjoy eight scheduled performances of this multiple Tony Award winning musical.

Auditions!  The first round of auditions were held this past Saturday, January 13th.   This event is made possible by ALL of the parent and student volunteers coming together to welcome auditioning students (over 400!) and their families, as well as to support staff and panelists. 
 
A very BiG thank you to Paulette Cauthorn, Merrill Komai & Emily delReal in the main office, to Mia Waller & Alex Fortescue, our Audition Day co-chairs; to Liz Isaacs, our Staff Appreciation chair who coordinated all the food for our teachers, staff, and volunteers; and to Janet Yieh, our Merchandise co-chair for ordering and coordinating all the volunteer Ts! 
 
Thanks also to those who donated refreshments for families who chose to wait on campus, and a special shout out to Monica Levavi for coordinating the complimentary coffee from Java Beach Café.  It was a LOT of delicious coffee and we went through every last drop.

Growing Up Asian in America provides a unique platform for young people to creatively explore and celebrate being both Asian or Pacific Islander and American.

 

Every year, more than 500 Bay Area students from Kindergarten through 12th grades submit artwork, essays and videos on a single theme, with 20 Best in Class winners receiving a $500 award. We started our signature program in 1995 as one of the largest youth celebrations of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in the nation. It encourages young Asian Americans to take pride in their identities, and helps others understand the varied experiences of our youth growing up in the Bay Area’s diverse communities.

Academy SF & Ruth Asawa SOTA are offering Badminton, Baseball, Fencing, Girls Flag Football, Softball, Track & Field, and Boys Volleyball for spring athletic teams.
 
Those interested Softball and Baseball athletes should see the Academy Athletic Director Brendan McCarthy immediately. It is our first year fielding a softball team, and the season starts on Feb 15th.

The award winning Bay Area Theatre Company (BATCO) was founded by Ruth Asawa SOTA graduates in 2012 and is housed at the San Francisco African American Cultural Center. Starting in the spring semester 2018 BATCO is offering its first ever high school apprenticeship program exclusive to current students from Ruth Asawa SOTA.

 

Students from any department may apply to intern in all aspects of Theatre production in a customized environment to support your artistic interests.

Facilitator Bio

Dr. Aaminah Norris is parent of alumna Tasneem Norris, 2017 graduate from the Musical Theater Department and Aasiya Norris, current junior in the Vocal Classical department. 

 

Dr. Norris is a critical multicultural educator whose overall focus is instituting educational practices, which affirm the instantiation of more positive identities for youth across the United States and internationally. Norris has more than 20 years of experience supporting schools and not for profit organizations in addressing issues of educational equity for low income students of color. Her background in education includes teaching, administration, and curriculum-development for thousands of students in grades K-16. She researches, teaches, and advocates use of digital and social media in formal and informal learning environments to address racial and gender inequities. 

 

Dr. Norris authored curricula for the films Miss Representation and The Mask You Live In. 

 

Currently, she is Assistant Professor in the Teaching Credentials Branch of the College of Education at Sacramento State University.

Happy November!  Our nonprofit partner, Friends of SOTA's 100% in 100 days Annual Fund Campaign ends the week following Thanksgiving.  The purpose of this time frame is to secure gifts and pledges early, so we can accurately project our income and budget spending accordingly.

 
As of today, FoSOTA has received donations from 226 of our 732 families (30.87%).
 
Money contributed towards our Annual Fund is used to hire professional Artists-in-Residence who are an integral part of the teaching staff.  This year, 80 artists have been hired to support the departments at a cost of $586,345.   In addition, donations are used to help pay for much needed supplies, performance expenses, professional services and venue rental.  FoSOTA also supports the full service college center and  pays for other academic needs that cannot be met with the school's SFUSD budget.
 
Each family is counted towards their department's 100% goal and donations of any size count.  Annual Fund donations are tax deductible as FOSOTA is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.  Please visit the FoSOTA website to donate online at www.fosota.org/donations.  Donations can be set up as one-time, monthly or quarterly  payments.  Donations via check can be mailed to:  FoSOTA, 236 West Portal Ave. #844, San Francisco, CA  94127

The happy, if tired, SOTA Robotics team is back from the weekend of robotics competition near Sacramento and what an experience this has been! The team again made it to the playoffs after ranking 7th out of 37 and was the alliance captain. Over 20 of our students came, most of whom were attending a robotics competition for the first time and it looked like they were thrilled. Huge thanks to our senior Steve Fang who organized the outing, to the parents who chaperoned and kept the team fed, and to our new mentor, Doug, who helped kids fix the robot and keep it in the fight throughout the competition.
 
This is our last competition for this year and the team will start preparing for the next season, which kicks off in January. As resourceful as the team is, consistently outranking many teams with much larger budgets, we need funding to keep this amazing thing going.
 
Many companies have sponsorships for FIRST robotics teams that are there for the asking, and we're asking you to check with your employer if they can sponsor our team. In particular, Apple has a grant that expires in December and we're looking for someone who works there who can help us with the sponsorship.

San Francisco Unified School District is launching it's 4th annual Inclusive Schools Week Poster Competition!

 

SFUSD value's the creativity and experience of it's students. As a way to showcase that creativity, we are seeking poster submissions for our 4th annual Inclusive Schools Week celebration.


Students have the opportunity to design a poster and submit their work for consideration as the official outreach materials during our celebration. Three student winners will be chosen.

 

The poster designs will be used for the week long celebration as the promotional materials going out to every school in the district.

Senior Portraits will be taken on Wed, Nov 1st & Thurs, Nov 2nd. 

 

The time-slots for your senior portrait sittings on  have been released and are now posted outside Mr. Rombro's office and Ms. Albert’s office on the 3rd floor. On each day the portrait times begin at 1pm. The final time slot on each day is 5:45pm.  If you have conflicts with the sitting time please visit Mr Rombro to find a solution.

 

Your appointment letter with additional information regarding purchasing instructions will be distributed to you in your classes this Friday.

 

On the day of your portrait there is a ten dollar ($10-) sitting fee, payable by check, cash, or credit card.

 

Proofs will be mailed to your home in about 3 weeks after the sitting.

Our new After School Tutoring and Homework center, "The ROSE Lab," is opening this week starting tomorrow, October 10, 2017 in the library.

 

The ROSE Lab will be open to all students, Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 3:10 to 5pm. 

 

Students may drop in for a quiet place to do homework or for subject area tutoring as needed from teachers and staff.  All students must sign in upon entry.

SFMOMA and New York based artists Whoop Dee Doo are creating a one of a kind variety show and need your talents to help make the show.

 

SFMOMA is looking for performance acts and an all-stair crew to work with the artists to design, develop, build and perform in a one of a kind variety show together with Whoop Dee Doo at the museum on November 4th & 5th for two full days of performance and fun for thousands of museum guests.

 

This is a great chance to work closely with Whoop Dee Doo, a New York based artist group that creates site specific performances at museums, galleries and community centers across the country.

Please join the Asawa SOTA Beautification Team and volunteers for the first Beautification Day for this school year. Meet other families and have fun.

 

We will meet in the quad; parents/guardians, teachers and students are welcome to join in, to help spruce up our favorite special high school campus. Snacks and supplies will be provided.

 

Projects will include the usual gardening and on-going painting projects, with a focus on the mysterious ROTC space: we will organize the gardening tools and supplies, and then move these items to a new spot (to be determined). This space will be used in the very near future for our ever growing Robotics Club, as they are planning a build for competition at the end of October.

The Botanical Gardens in Golden Gate Park will host the 3rd Annual Flower Piano Event this summer from July 13th through July 24th.

 

Asawa SOTA has been invited to participate on Wednesday, July 19th between 4pm and 6pm.  Click HERE to sign up!

 

Jessa Barzelay (brother Nick is a SOTA alum), is the Director of Learning and Engagement for the Botanical Garden, and has offered us one afternoon, four performance spaces, two hours, for Asawa SOTA students to perform in the beautiful gardens!  

 

Each space will have a piano available - dancers, singers, actors, all our musicians, are welcome to claim a spot and dance, sing, play any and all instruments, to their hearts' content!

 

The performance spaces are The Garden of Fragrance, the Exhibition Garden (also known as the Thomas Church Pavilion), the Great Meadow, and Fountain Plaza. Map attached.

 

Please sign up for a 1/2 hour performance time, and have fun with your friends over the summer. We will also need student managers and parent volunteers to represent the school and make sure our group is organized, can answer questions, and enjoy this great opportunity to perform al fresco! 

 

There will be one meeting on-site at the Botanical Garden, to meet with Jessa and tour the performing spaces. Time and date TBA.

 

Admission to the event is FREE to residents of San Francisco, make sure to bring id with your address to the entrance gate.

It was a full house at our new student orientation on Monday night.
