Mr.Payne's Monday Reminders, January 7, 2019
Posted 1/6/19
Dear Ruth Asawa SOTA Community:

Welcome back to the spring semester 2019!  I hope everyone had a restful winter break. I’m looking forward to reaffirming our commitment to student achievement in academics and the arts, as well as deepening our commitment to equity based on how individual identity impacts experience.

The first annual Senior Showcase “Senior Sendoff” is this Friday, January 11 at 7:30pm in the Dan Kryston Theatre. This interdisciplinary show will sell out!  Buy advance tickets at the Ruth Asawa SOTA Box Office.

It is with sadness that we learned of the passing of Mr. Gordon Chalmers on December 24. Mr. Chalmers was a long time SFUSD educator at both J. Eugene McAteer High School and Ruth Asawa School of the Arts. Rest in Peace and much love to his family. The family requests that donations be made in his honor to the Friends Of Ruth Asawa School of the Arts, College Center, in his name.

Please come out Monday night for Student Gov fundraiser to Chipotle Mexican Grill in Stonestown, 5 to 9pm.  Proceeds go to support prom and student activities. Vegetarian, vegan, Keto, and gluten free options available. Get the flyer/coupon from any Student Gove member or from Ms. Park in room 223.

There have been a few staff transitions for the spring semester 2019:
  • Wellness Coordinator - Jason Gee.  Mr. Gee replaces Marcus Christmas, who has moved to a permanent position at O’Connell High School.  Mr. Gee had been a Social Worker in SFUSD for many years before moving to the classroom at Ruth Asawa SOTA this fall.  Mr. Gee will cover the position for the spring semester while our permanent coordinator, Mr. Robert Francour completes his sabbatical.
  • History teacher - Ms. Hosanna Rubio, Ruth Asawa alum and UC Davis graduate will take over the position vacated by Mr. Gee. Welcome Ms. Rubio!
  • English teacher - Ms. Bruna Lee will take over the position vacated by Ms. Daniella Ocampo, who resigned due to personal reasons.  Ms. Lee has recently been teaching at Balboa High School. Welcome Ms. Lee!
  • Math - Mr. Chase Mateusiak will fill in for the spring for Ms. Jhina Alvarado-Morse, who has been out on a personal leave. Welcome Mr. Mateusiak!
  • World Dance - Ms. Jessica Acosta will be leading the World Dance program while Ms. Joti Singh is on family leave. Welcome Ms. Acosta!
  • Nurse - Ms. Emma Covington has replaced Ms. Denise Ngo who resigned in December to pursue a new career.  Welcome Ms. Covington!

School Without Walls Day is coming!!! On January 16th, 2019, all students are participating in a school-wide, student-organized “big picture” activity day. All students need to sign up for an activity of their choice using the link below: Off-campus activities require a field trip form signed by a parent or guardian. These will be available from Mr. Padlo in room 222 or from the teacher/advisor for the event. Note: SWW Day is not a ”day off” from school, but a “day of” extended learning. Attendance is mandatory, and students are responsible for completing the assessment at the end of the activity (access to this online form will be given at the end of the day). Arts departments will be providing credit for attendance and completion of the assessment document.

The outstanding volunteerism of our parent community is deeply appreciated!  Opportunities to contribute abound and fit every schedule.  Sign up here for events and support throughout the spring:
