Congratulations to the CLASS OF 2019!

Congratulations! Your student is in the final stretch of their high school career and graduation is on the horizon. As we approach this important day, we want to provide you with some important information for planning purposes.


Graduation Ceremony, Reception & Parking:

Graduation is Monday, June 3, 2019 at 10AM at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater located at 3301 Lyon Street, San Francisco, CA 94123.

Graduating students must arrive at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater no later than 9AM with their caps and gowns. Please ensure your student does not bring personal items, purses, or backpacks to the theater as there is no security for personal items while the graduation ceremony is in progress. Family members and guests of the graduate should be seated in the theater no later than 9:50 AM. The graduation ceremony begins promptly at 10AM and is expected to last approximately two (2) hours.

The Palace of Fine Arts is a non-smoking venue.
The following items are not permitted inside the Palace of Fine Arts Theater

  • Balloons
  • Confetti
  • Glitter
  • Loud noise makers or excessive noise

Parking is limited at the Palace of Fine Arts Theater and there may be some parking found in the adjacent neighborhoods. Public transportation is also an option. For direct municipal travel directions and bus lines, go to


Graduation Tickets:

Per SFUSD Board Policy, all graduation tickets and activities are free of charge to students and families. Each graduating student is automatically allotted two (2) tickets and you do not need to request them. Students will receive their two tickets at graduation rehearsal on Friday, May 31st.

For families seeking more than two tickets to graduation, additional free tickets will be available on a first come, first served basis on the Asawa SOTA box office starting Monday, May 20th at 8AM. You may request a maximum of five (5) additional tickets per graduate.


Graduates DO NOT need a ticket for admittance. Seating is limited at the Palace of Fine Arts so please do not request more tickets than you require.

Additional tickets must be picked up by the graduating student or parent/guardian in the Main Office from Friday, May 24th through Friday, May 31st between the hours of 7:30 AM and 4PM. Please note that admission to the ceremony is by engraved graduation ticket only. Mobile tickets or paper tickets printed from arts-people will not be honored.

Graduation Pictures:

A professional photographer from Campus Candids will be taking pictures at the graduation ceremony. Each graduate will have a photo opportunity when they receive their diploma. This will allow the ceremony to proceed in an orderly manner and we ask parents to refrain from coming to the stage to take photos. Graduation Ceremony Recording:

As a parting gift to all of our seniors, the Ruth Asawa SOTA PTSA arranged for the graduation ceremony to be documented and recorded by a professional videographer.  The link to the final video will available on our YouTube channel for you to share with friends and family.  Please check the PTSA website toward the end of June for the link.


Graduation Caps & Gowns:

All graduating students MUST wear the Asawa SOTA cap and gown to graduation. Caps and gowns will be distributed to seniors on Friday, May 31 from 8AM to 9AM in the third floor Pannone Gallery, room A311. There is no cost for the cap and gown.

Graduation Rehearsal:

Graduation rehearsal is Friday, May 31 at 9:15AM in the Dan Kryston Memorial Theater. Attendance is mandatory. Two (2) engraved graduation tickets will be distributed to students at the conclusion of rehearsal. Your requested additional tickets must be picked up in the Main Office by Friday, May 31st at 4PM. Please safeguard all graduation tickets as they cannot be replaced.


Senior Luncheon & Awards Ceremony:

A luncheon and awards ceremony for graduating students will be held on Friday, May 31st at 11:45AM. The PTSA needs volunteers for the luncheon.  Please sign up HERE!


Following the luncheon, there will be an awards ceremony in the Dan Kryston Memorial Theater. Unfortunately, due to space constraints in the theater, we are unable to invite parents or outside guests.


Graduation Ceremony Expenses:

Graduation is entirely funded by the school-site budget.  Listed below is a projection of the budgeted expenses for the 2019 graduation:

Palace of Fine Arts & Equipment Rental  $ 8,000 
Graduation Programs/Awards Graduation  $ 2,000
Reception  $ 3,500
Total Projected Expense Budget  $13,500

If you would like to provide financial support for our graduation activities, any and all donations are gratefully accepted. Our suggested amount is $100 per student, but no contribution is too small!
